How A Bad Mattress Can Cause Back Pain

A lesser known cause for back pain is having a bad mattress. Although common causes such as an injury, bad posture, or poor eating habits are the leading cause of back pain - a bad mattress can actually worsen the pain! The combination of a pre-existing pain + a bad mattress is a recipe for disaster and here’s why.

Can A Mattress Cause Back Pain?

There is no such thing as a one size fits all approach when it comes to a mattress. Your mattress should be able to accommodate your needs. A mattress can cause you back pain if you’re sleeping on the wrong mattress. Therefore, it’s very important to figure out what is a bad mattress and what is a good mattress.

Bad Mattress

When a mattress has gone bad it no longer offers you back support and comfort. Although old mattresses tend to do this, a new mattress can also be bad if it’s not the right fit. Also, it’s important to note that some mattresses can cause both lower or upper back pain. If you haven’t had any obvious injuries, and your posture is pretty good, it might be your bed that's causing you the pain.

When a mattress starts to sag in the middle and no longer offers proper back support, it’s time to look for a new one. It is recommended to get a new bed every 7 years; however, if your bed is causing you obvious issues then you might want to replace it sooner. Also, if you run your fingers through your bed and it has lumps, it’s time for a new bed. No bed should have lumps, and those lumps can cause you back pain after time.

Good Mattress

A good mattress on the other hand offers you proper back support and comfort. Also, it helps you have a good night's rest instead of keeping you up or having to keep adjusting. When deciding for a new mattress, find one that offers good back support. You will be able to tell if it has good back support if it aligns with the natural curves of your spine. This can also help you avoid muscle soreness in the morning.

Shopping for a new mattress can be pretty expensive, but the good news is Black Friday is almost here. You can look up some amazing deals online and you may want to finance a good bed. There are some things we work hard for, and a good night's rest is not something you should compromise on. However, it’s understandable if money is a little tight, but investing into your health is very important for your overall well being.

How Do I Know If My Back Pain Is From My Mattress?

There are several ways you can determine if your back pain is from your mattress. For example, the pain persists heavily in the morning, your mattress is old, or you have restless sleep. However, a more accurate way to find out what’s going on is by visiting your Chiropractor. Some of the questions you’ll be asked are if you’ve had any recent injuries, or what type of bed you’re sleeping on.

Once the cause has been determined, then proper treatment can be recommended. Until then, you can guess why you’re experiencing back pain; but until you have been checked out by a professional, it will continue to just be a guess. You would be surprised how affordable a Chiropractor can be, and some accept most insurances.

Final Thought

While a persistent back pain can be caused by a bad mattress, there are certain signs you will want to look out for. This includes if your back pain is felt mostly in the morning, you have an old mattress, or you don’t get a good night's rest. You can conclude that your pain is from a bad mattress, but getting checked out by a Chiropractor is the best way to determine this.
